The narrow wallpaper strips ensure that the wallpaper will fit almost perfectly to the width of the wall. Additionally, the repeating pattern, where each of the strips is identical, allows the pattern elements to align perfectly on the wall as soon as we start gluing the wallpaper from the ceiling. This means there is very little material surplus.
