The End of Comedy is the project of a collective formed by Californian musician Michael Collins, who has given himself a 'mind-blowing' stage name. Drugdealer doesn’t sell anything illegal but deserves recognition for bringing together a whole new Californian indie pop scene, particularly the crowd around Mac De Marco.
And just for this festive and so relaxed atmosphere, our ears are wrapped in a psychedelic pop sound that is ultimately very contemporary, leading us to a languorous sensuality that we so desperately need right now.
We close our eyes and envision ourselves aboard a VW van heading towards Long Beach, surfboards in the back.
Behind this cool demeanor lies a talented musician, Michael Collins, a former member of Run DMT and Salvia Plath, who was swept away by the Californian wave at the end of the 2000s. In Los Angeles, where he settles in 2009, he meets a certain Ariel Pink, who, by the way, contributes to The End of Comedy on the track Easy to Forget. We know Ariel Pink's influence on the Californian indie scene of the 2010s, and Michael Collins will fit right into that groove.

The End of Comedy was released in 2016 and stands out for its simplicity and return to the roots that folk pop in the US really needed. Blending psychedelic pop and lo-fi, Drugdealer makes a remarkable entrance with this first project.
With a very jazzy 'New York' instrumental opening, The End of Comedy takes us to the West Coast with the second track, 'The Real World', featuring much warmer sounds, as if the journey ought to be the 'real world', much like that of migratory birds. Drugdealer's music feels just right because it’s very accessible, reminding us of the warmth of 70s Californian pop, sometimes Fleetwood, sometimes Beach Boys – a perfect soundtrack for the famous 'golden hour' on the beach... The album is sunny and warm, closing with another very jazzy instrumental punctuated by a huge laughter from the musician, as if he needed to know how to head back to the East Coast one day… The end of good things, The End of Comedy, we should all be saying that maybe at the end of August once the sound of the holiday bells has chimed...
